East & West Gadsden High Schools Soaring to New Heights
May 2011
Mr. Reginald James, superintendent for Gadsden County Schools, has a vision to help as many children as possible to continue their journey toward self improvement. The superintendent utilized A Better Body’s UPKUDO Karate program to help 45 students learn personal safety techniques, karate skills, life rules for success, control and respect. All of which will help students grow from being taught in a positive and loving environment. His vision is to bring this type of education to all the students to raise their self esteem and develop discipline.
The classes were taught by Master Anne Radke, 6th Degree Black Belt, with her assistants Ganine and Geremy Gerald. Master Anne spoke to the students in the beginning of the session and said “ To get respect and love in life, you must first give it to yourself and others.” This statement opened the door to learning, mutual acceptance and unity.
At the completion of the first session, students received their karate belts and diplomas with a great sense of pride and joy. They demonstrated a show of karate techniques including outstanding flying kicks, kata, and self defense moves. Grades are also important to the A Better Body’s educational programs. Five students from West Gadsden and eight students from East Gadsden were awarded the Honor Patches for their honor roll grades. In addition, West Gadsden’s Robert Sadberry and East Gadsden’s Michael King were chosen to receive the All Star Award for excellence in both attitude and team work.
Mr. James, Master Anne and the 21st Century Learning Center staff all agree that by working together as a team for the Gadsden Community children it can bring about the best possible results to soar on to new heights for our leaders of tomorrow.
